Helpful Facts About Mulch
-
Proper mulch depth matters. All mulch applications should be installed at a depth of three to four inches. This helps suppress weeds, regulate soil temperature, and maintain moisture in garden and landscape beds.
-
Mulch should be replenished annually. Because mulch is an organic material, it naturally breaks down over time. This decomposition process improves soil quality and fertility. To keep plant beds looking their best, apply two to three inches of fresh mulch directly over existing mulch each spring.
-
Mulch colour will fade naturally. Sun exposure can cause mulch to fade throughout the season. To refresh its appearance, simply turn the mulch with a pitchfork, bringing darker material back to the surface.
-
Avoid weed barrier fabric under mulch. To improve garden health, do not place landscape fabric between the soil and mulch. Allowing mulch to break down directly into the soil adds valuable organic matter (humus), improves root-zone fertility, and helps keep roots cool and moist during hot summer months.
-
Surface mould is normal and temporary. Occasionally, mulch may develop yellow or slimy-looking surface growth, sometimes referred to as “dog vomit mould.” This can occur when mulch is wet and dusty. It is harmless, will dry up and disappear over time, or can be easily removed with a shovel.
