Why Install a Pond?
A pond is more than a water feature: it's a living, breathing ecosystem you build right in your own backyard. When done thoughtfully, it becomes a self-sustaining habitat for fish, plants, and local wildlife, operating with minimal chemical input and very little ongoing effort from you.
Our easy-to-install backyard pond kits make the whole process approachable for any DIYer: there's no piecing together mismatched fittings or figuring out which pump works with which filter because everything you need comes in one box. Beyond the ecological reward, there's something deeply satisfying about sitting beside a water garden you built yourself, watching the world slow down around it.
And if you'd like to understand the process before you break ground, we offer seminars on How to Build a Pond that walk through every step in plain, practical terms.
How to Start
Start by thinking carefully about placement. The best pond is one you'll see and hear often. Whether that's from your favourite outdoor chair or through a window when the weather keeps you inside, visibility matters. Two simple tricks can help you visualize the space before committing: lay a garden hose along the proposed outline, or spray the grass with landscaper marking paint. Both give you a much more accurate read on size and shape than simply imagining it.
Once you've confirmed hydro access and settled on a size and design, bring us those details and we can help you choose the right pond kit and any additional products you'll need.
Installation
Once your kit and materials are ready, the real fun begins. Dig the hole in the shape you've chosen, making sure to include shelves at varying depths for marginal plants and fish-feeding areas. Install your biofall and skimmer, ensuring both are level.
Lay the underlay before anything else. This step is especially important in clay-heavy soils, where it protects the liner from rocks and roots below and helps wick away water trapped underneath. Place the liner on top of the underlay and attach it to the skimmer and biofalls according to the kit instructions.
Cover the entire liner with rock and gravel, tuck the cables from any underwater lights beneath the gravel, and then add your water. You can plant directly into the gravel, introduce your fish when the system is running smoothly, and finish by naturalizing the pond edges with mulch and plantings.
